Pyroxenite melting at subduction zones

چکیده

Abstract Arc magmatism is thought to be driven by peridotite melting in the mantle wedge. Yet pyroxenites are ubiquitous region beneath magmatic arcs. Because they typically have lower solidi temperatures and higher melt productivities compared peridotite, likely play a significant role magma generation. Here, we use Zn/Fe ratios of global database Pliocene–Holocene primitive arc magmas show that, as crustal thickness overlying plate increases, so does proportion pyroxenite-derived melts relative peridotite-derived melts. In fact, at arcs with thicknesses >40 km, majority sourced from pyroxenite. Major trace element geochemistry pyroxenite consistent derivation mafic frozen en route surface. We hypothesize continental crust wedge displaced toward pressures cooler temperatures, thereby lowering extent allowing pyroxeniteveined dominate budget.

Rayleigh-Taylor Instabilities from Hydrous Melting Propel "Cold Plumes" at Subduction Zones

It is commonly thought hot diapiric flows prevail in the mantle wedge above the subducting slab. However, hydration and partial melting along the slab can create a situation in which a Rayleigh-Taylor instability can develop at the top of a cold subducting slab. We have modelled numerically with a high-resolution 2-D regional model this parodoxically interesting geological phenomenon in which r...

Subduction Zones

[1] Subduction zones are where sediments, oceanic crust, and mantle lithosphere return to and reequilibrate with Earth’s mantle. Subduction zones are interior expressions of Earth’s 55,000 km of convergent plate margins and are the geodynamic system that builds island arcs. Excess density of the mantle lithosphere in subduction zones provides most of the power needed to move the plates while in...

Simple Kinematics of Subduction Zones

Two main types of subduction zones can be distinguished: (1) those where the subduction hinge migrates away from the upper plate; and (2) those in which the subduction hinge migrates toward the upper plate. Apart from a few exceptions, this distinction seems to apply particularly for W-directed subduction zones and Eor NE-directed subduction zones, respectively. Moreover, the rate of subduction...

Dynamics of subduction initiation at preexisting fault zones

We show that a new subduction zone can initiate at a preexisting dipping fault zone with reasonable plate forces, consistent with what is observed in the western Pacific. The dynamics of subduction initiation within a viscoelastic medium has been systematically explored with the finite element method. We investigate the compression of oceanic lithosphere with hoth force and velocity boundary co...

Diapiric flow at subduction zones: a recipe for rapid transport.

Recent geochemical studies of uranium-thorium series disequilibrium in rocks from subduction zones require magmas to be transported through the mantle from just above the subducting slab to the surface in as little as approximately 30,000 years. We present a series of laboratory experiments that investigate the characteristic time scales and flow patterns of the diapiric upwelling model of subd...
